Migrant woman saved from Rhodes shipwreck names son after rescuer

She named her son Antonis to honor her hero, the man who saved her life

The Eritrian migrant whose photos splashed across the world’s press after she was saved by a Greek rescuer when her boat sank off Rhodes decided to name her son Antonios (Anthony), after her rescuer. The young woman, who gave birth on Thursday, was just one of 200 people on the boat that sank off Rhodes on April 20.

Rhodes Bar Association Human Rights Committee Chief Peppy Papapavlou visited the woman, along with Sgt. Antonis Deligiorgis, after the birth. In tears, she thanked the man for saving both her life and that of her son.
