Migration minister briefs PASOK, Centrists’ Union on refugee issue

They discussed the formation of a cross-party committee on the refugee crisis

Alternate Minister for Migration Policy Yiannis Mouzalas met with PASOK President Fofi Gennimata and Centrists’ Union President Vassilis Leventis to discuss the formation of a cross-party committee on the refugee crisis and present them the government’s proposals.

Gennimata left the meeting without making any statements to the press but later released a written statement saying that she had presented the minister with specific proposals made by her party stressing that PASOK will take necessary initiatives on this sensitive issue.

She also criticised the policy adopted by the European Union and the government thus far, saying the crisis needed specific initiatives ahead of what promised to be a difficult winter.

Leventis said that the success of Greece’s policy would be determined by preparing state mechanisms for arrivals in larger numbers and Greece’s diplomatic pressure on Europe to force Turkey’s compliance, since it was a gateway country.

He also proposed creating reception structures in areas away from inhabited districts, such as former army camps, and was in favour of a UN programme to host refugees in unused apartments.
