Mitsotakis’s election would be a watershed moment, says Wall Street Journal

He could overhaul his near-bankrupt and deeply discredited party

The US newspaper Wall Street Journal published an extensive article written by Simon Nixon on the political situation in Greece and the elections for the leadership of opposition’s party New Democracy.

Titled ‘ Greece’s Glimmer of New Year Hope’ the article claims that “the potential election of Kyriakos Mitsotakis as head of Greece’s main opposition party would be a watershed moment”.

If he was elected, Mr. Mitsotakis “would have a mandate to overhaul his near-bankrupt and deeply discredited party” says the article adding that “A reformed and reinvigorated New Democracy capable of providing robust opposition could put pressure on Syriza to live up to its own ambitious but largely unfulfilled reform promises. It would also raise the spirits of Greece’s beleaguered private sector, whose fortunes are critical to Greece’s economic prospects. Businesses would take comfort that at least part of the political system is responsive to their needs”.

Mr. Mitsotakis speaking to private TV channel SKAI said that 60% of ND’s supporters vote for New Democracy to turn over a new leaf noting, though, that “the percentages cannot be added up”, although “two of the candidates have made statements. Mr. Georgiadis has supported me and Mr. Tzitzikostas made a moderate statement with which I agree in many points”.
