More migrant children swallowed by the Aegean off Farmakonisi

12 dead in the Aegean, more bodies sought in a rescue operation that is underway

Twelve dead bodies were pulled from the sea in northeast Aegean, off the coast of the island of Farmakonisi, after their wooden dinghy capsized shortly after midnight. It is believed that there were 50 migrants on board the vessel, risking the unsafe journey to Europe. Among the dead are reportedly six children, four men and two women. A search is now on to find the other missing people.

Frontex forces rushed to the area after a call was made to the European emergency number. Dozens of people were in the sea. The Greek coast guard managed to rescue 26 people, whereas another 12 are being sought. Two children rescued were immediately flown to the hospital at Samos.

A super puma helicopter and naval ship are in the area to find people still missing. The nationality of the refugees is still not known.
