Musk to Tesla Execs: Get back in the office or get out

If that is not acceptable to any executive, then they are free to "pretend to work somewhere else," Musk tweeted

Newsroom June 2 01:15

Elon Musk has told Tesla executives, in no uncertain terms, that they can no longer work remotely, Bloomberg reports.

Elaborating on an internal memo the Tesla CEO sent, Musk shared in a tweet that he has told his top executives that they must return to “the office for a minimum (and I mean *minimum*) of 40 hours per week or depart Tesla. This is less than we ask of factory workers.”

If that is not acceptable to any executive, then they are free to “pretend to work somewhere else,” Musk tweeted.

In the internal email with the subject line of “Remote work is no longer acceptable [sic],” Musk said that executives and others who return to the office must work from “a main Tesla office, not a remote branch office unrelated to the job duties (or) in another state.”

The world’s richest man is known for commanding a strong work ethic of his employees, at all levels — from interns, to factory workers, to the top.

Once, at SpaceX, Musk noticed a cluster of interns waiting for coffee. Musk swiftly dashed off a memo threatening to fire all interns if he were to witness such a lack of productivity again, and he installed security cameras to make sure his orders were followed.

Most recently, workers at Tesla’s factory in Shanghai were locked in for months and expected to work 12-hour days, due to China’s zero-COVID tolerance policy. The employees were shuttled between the factory and their sleeping quarters, in unused factories or military camps, and day/night workers shared these sleeping facilities in shifts.

Workers at Twitter, known for its lax work-from-home policy, may be in for a rude awakening.
