“Cold Response” kicks off in Norway amid escalating Russia-West tensions over Ukraine

The large military exercise “Cold Response 2022” was launched by NATO on the border with Russia. The exercise involves 30,000 troops, 200 aircraft and 50 warships, and is being held in Norway amid escalating Russia-West tensions over Moscow’s invasion of Ukraine.

ColdResponse22 is a long-planned, defensive exercise that brings together thousands of Allied troops and NATO partners, testing their capabilities to work in cold weather across Norway, on land, air and sea.

The participating troops come from more than 25 countries in Europe and North America.

The exercise, which takes place every two years and is considered to be one of NATO’s largest, is being held a few miles away from the Russian border and is expected to be completed on April 1. The general in charge of the exercise, General Yngve Odlo, told TV2 that “it is a defensive exercise” and clarified that “it is not a military operation with an aggressive purpose”.
