NATO Summit: Turkey lifts veto on Finland, Sweden accession (Doc) (Upd.)

There was a quadripartite meeting on the sidelines of NATO in Madrid

Newsroom June 28 09:49

An agreement was reached on Tuesday, on the sidelines of the NATO Summit in Madrid, on the accession of Sweden and Finland to the North Atlantic Alliance.

Turkey has agreed to lift its veto on the two Nordic countries joining NATO, following a quadripartite meeting attended by the Secretary-General of NATO Jens Stoltenberg, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, Finnish President Sauli Niinisto and Swedish Prime Minister Magdalena Andersson.

The Turkish Foreign Ministry announced last Wednesday meetings of Turkish and Swedish officials. The quadripartite summit was aimed at curbing the Turkish president’s objections to the Nordic countries joining NATO, and it seems that the pressure, mainly from the US side, has borne fruit.

Ankara, Helsinki, and Stockholm will prepare a joint memorandum to address Turkey’s concerns over the two Scandinavian countries joining NATO, Finnish media reported earlier.
