New Democracy leader Meimarakis says we will reconsider backing government

Meimarakis things have changed since Friday

The leader of New Democracy, Greece’s main opposition party, Vangelis Meimarakis said on Monday he would reconsider his party’s support to the upcoming bills in parliament, following the revelations of former Greek Finance Minister Yanis varoufakis’s plan B that involved hacking millions of citizens’ tax codes. Meimarakis called on the intervention of the Hellenic Data Protection Authority in a speech he made before his party’s youth group. He made it clear that New Democracy’s support to the current government cannot be taken for granted anymore after the recent revelations, while some close associates of Meimarakis believe Greek PM Alexis Tsipras was privy to Varoufakis’s secret plan. The Syriza-ANEL coalition government would not have been able to pass two bills last week considered prior actions by EU partners for more financial aid, unless the New Democracy party along with other minor opposition parties had offered their backing.
