Norway toughens refugee asylum policy

Refugees will be immediately deported, if ineligible

The Norwegian government is adopting a much tougher stance against refugees applying for asylum in the country, after it decided that those ineligible for asylum would be immediately deported. Migration Minister Sylvi Listhaug said authorities had found many cases where many refugees would disappear after submitting their asylum forms. The government announced that those who did not comply with the necessary conditions would be detained and jailed before being sent back to their countries of origin. Listhaug justified the sudden harsher stance on dealing with refugees by saying there had to be more effective control of their whereabouts after they applied for asylum. The decision was taken following police estimates that over 9,000 refugees would be filing asylum applications by the end of 2016.
