Olympiacos performed a miracle by defeating Fiorentina in the Europa Conference League final, thereby becoming the first team with a European trophy and earning the points for the victory in the UEFA rankings.
Ayoub El Kaabi’s goal in the 116th minute awarded the Piraeus team 2,000 points, raising their total for this season to 17,000 and their five-year aggregate to 48,000.
With these points, they surpassed Lille to reach the 44th position in the rankings and caught up with Marseille, although they lag behind due to this season’s points tally.
By winning the title of the third-tier club competition of UEFA, the Piraeus team significantly upgraded their European ticket, avoiding the summer qualifiers.
This means they will compete on September 25-26 and not in the second qualifying round of the Conference League starting in July.
Several teams in the first pot are already known (Roma, Manchester United, Porto, Eintracht Frankfurt, Tottenham, Lazio, Real Sociedad), with Lyon expected to be in the second pot and Olympiacos likely to be between the second and third pots.
It is noted that from the new season, the Europa League will feature a single league of 36 teams, with each team playing matches against two clubs from each pot.
Meanwhile, Olympiacos also helped Greece, as their success moved the country to the 15th position in the UEFA rankings, restoring the second qualification spot for the Champions League.
The “reds” needed a win in the 90 minutes or in extra time of the Europa Conference League final against Fiorentina to add 0.400 points to Greece’s tally, and they achieved it with Ayoub El Kaabi’s goal in the 116th minute.
As a result, Greece surpassed Denmark to reach the 15th position, securing five European spots for the 2025-2026 season.
