Parliament’s draft budget discussion amid rallies and protests

The voting of the draft 2015 budget on Sunday night has stirred the reaction of union groups to be protesting from 5 p.m. onwards

The debate on the 2015 draft budget is to be concluded on Sunday night when conservative New Democracy (ND) Prime Minister Antonis Samaras, head of the coalition government, addresses the parliamentary plenum. Also speaking to the plenum will be the main opposition Coalition of the Left (SYRIZA) leader Alexis Tsipras, shortly before the roll call vote.

Saturday night’s discussion was just a short breath away from violent rallies, and Sunday night will be quite similar as protest rallies are scheduled against the austerity measures of the State Budget and the fact that troika’s demands are being discussed.

The country’s two largest unions are the General Confederation of Greek Workers (GSEE) and the Civil Servants’ Confederation (ADEDY). Both these groups have scheduled protest rallies just outside Greek parliament at 5 p.m. while the Comminist Party-affiliated union PAME is holding its own rally at Omonoia Square.
