The Neolithic lakeshore settlement of Dispilio occupied an artificial island near the modern village of Dispilio on Lake Orestiada, just 8km from Kastoria, northern Greece. People occupied the settlement 7,000 to 8,000 years ago and one of the many artefacts found in the area was the Dispilio tablet that is the oldest known written text that predates the Sumerian writing system. The wooden tablet with the text remained at the bottom of the lake for 7,500 years until it was found by the professor of prehistoric archaeology, George Hourmouziadis in 1993. Visitors to the settlement can walk on the platform and see replica huts and tools of the time.
