Mt. Taygetos is the highest mountain of a Peloponnesian mountain range, reacing 7,887 feet. In antiquity, it was associated with the nymph Taygete, a companion of Artemis, the goddess of wild animals. When she was pursued by Zeus, Artemis protected her by turning her into a deer. In Byzantine times, the mountain was also known as Pentadaktylos (meaning “five fingered”) and also Profitis Ilias. The views from the mountain are spectacular overlooking Sparta and Kalamata, whose skyline it dominates.
