The Turkish Mosque Yiali Tzami (meaning seaside mosque) dominates the Venetian harbor of Chania. The building has six small domes, but no minaret after it was demolished in the early 20th century. It was a place of workshop for Muslims until 1923 when the last Muslims left Crete as part of a population exchange. In its heyday, the mosque was covered with palm trees and also had the tombs of various pashas. Recent research by the Archaeological Service found that it was built on the site of a small church. These days the mosque is used for art exhibitions.
