PM Samaras shoots down opposition’s estimates for early elections

The government leader believes that the next President will be voted in by the current Parliament

Scenarios for early elections in response to the selection of a new President of the Republic were shot down today by Prime Minister Antonis Samaras, through a statement.

In order to celebrate the event for the 40th anniversary of the restoration of democracy in Parliament, the PM met with New Democracy MPs. They asked him whether he believes that the current House will be the one to elect a President of the Republic, and he answered that he believes it to be so.

According to deputies who were present at the meeting with Mr. Samaras in the House, the PM told them that “There will be no early elections. It seems we have 180 MPs”.

On its part, the opposition party of SYRIZA has made it clear that they will not consent to an election of a President, in order to attempt to lead the country to early elections.
