Since her first steps in Greek showbiz, the origin and heritage of popular singer Eleni Foureira have been a subject of much speculation.

Greek media have published articles upon articles covering the story of the beautiful star that was born in Albania but raised in Athens, mainly due to the fact that, for the first few years of her career, Foureira was lying about her roots.

When asked about her last name, the young singer would respond that she has Mexican descent, although these claims could be easily refuted by journalists who were willing to dig a little deeper.

Today, 27-year-old Eleni Foureira has already built a successful career and feels confident to speak openly about her Albanian roots.

In a recent interview, the singer revealed for the first time the reasons that forced her to hide from her devoted fans the fact that she was not born in Greece.

“I was hiding the fact that I was born in Albania because record labels, even before I joined (girl band) Mystique, would not even hear of it. It was a taboo for them,” she told Kool magazine.

“I never understood it, because I feel Greek. I do not speak any other language, I was educated here… And so I told myself that nothing would stop me from doing what I want and send my messages.”
