President Volodymyr Zelensky vows to continue the fight in address to UK Parliament

President Volodymyr Zelensky today vowed Ukraine would fight Russia ‘in the forests, in the fields, on the shores and in the streets’ as he echoed Sir Winston Churchill in a House of Commons speech to MPs.

Ukraine’s leader delivered what was called a “historic address” after House Speaker Sir Lindsay Hoyle approved a request for him to speak directly to MPs in the UK.

He made his speech via a video link from Kyiv, the capital city of Ukraine, which has been subjected to heavy shelling from Russian troops forcing residents to either flee or take shelter underground.

Mr Zelensky renewed an appeal for Western support as he addressed MPs at around 5pm.

He has previously called for Nato to impose a no-fly zone over his country, but Britain and other allies have rejected the move warning that it could spark a wider European war.

President Zelensky, in the address, also quoted Shakespeare.

He said: “The question for us now is ‘to be, or not to be?’

“For 13 days this question could have been asked.

“But now I can give you a definitive answer.

“It’s definitely yes – to be.

“I would like to remind you of the words the UK has already heard, which are important again.

“We will not give up and we will not lose. We will fight till the end at sea and in the air. We will continue fighting for our land whatever the cost.

“We will fight in the forests, in the fields, on the shores, in the streets.

“We will fight on the banks of rivers.”
