Prosecutor questions five Turkish nationals over heroin haul

The five Turkish nationals are being questioned about the 1 ton of heroin found in Filothei and Koropi

Five Turkish nationals involved in the recent seizure of a ton of heroin have been lead to the prosecuting authorities of Piraeus. All five were arrested on Friday by the Greek Coast Guard at a shipowner’s mansion in Filothei where 500 kilograms of heroin were found. Another six Greek citizens are also accused of the two batches found in Filothei and a warehouse in Koropi.

The suspects deny all charges, each one of them claiming different reasons. One of them claimed that he accidentally got involved in the case as he had come to Greece the previous day to visit a friend in a hotel.

More specifically, one of those arrested on June 4 reportedly rented a warehouse in Koropi for 8,000 euros. Another one bought bags for marble powder for 3,120 euros on June 10 and a third one bought a clark forklift for 2,250 euros on the same day.

A 40-year-old shipowner, his former wife and her friend, reportedly involved in the seizure will be detained temporarily, following a joint decision by an investigator and a prosecutor late on Tuesday. The shipowner’s former mother-in-law and the maid were released without any restrictions imposed.

The street value of the confiscated heroin is estimated at 30 million euros.
