Pyrgos, Ancient Olympia schools shut down

Tons of garbage in the streets pose a health danger for young students

Pyrgos and Ancient Olympia, in the Peloponnese, will shut down schools on Monday for at least a week due to health concerns following tons of uncollected garbage.

The deputy regional governors of West Greece and Elia said on Friday that the regional authorities “have done whatever they could but the central government needs to invervene now so public health is not further endangered,” as both cities are “in a state of health alert.”

The closure also applies to nursery schools in both cities will also remain shut for a week.

Household waste has sat uncollected following the end of a aanitary landfill agreement in the Nafpaktos area, on the mainland. City garbage trucks have stopped transporting household waste to the landfill and the garbage is piling up on the streets.
