Refugee crisis dominates discussions between Greek FM and his counterpart

They said a joint European solution is needed to tackle the refugee flows

The refugee crisis and energy issues dominated discussions between Foreign Minister Nikos Kotzias and his Hungarian counterpart, Peter Szijjarto, at the ministry.

Speaking at a joint press conference after the meeting, the two ministers agreed that a political solution for the war in Syria is needed, in order to tackle the root of the problem and rebuild a new country.

They also said a joint European solution is also needed to tackle the refugee flows as well as immediate financial support for countries who accept and accommodate refugees and migrants, such as Jordan and Lebanon. This measure would prevent refugees from leaving these countries.

Kotzias briefed Szijjarto for Greece’s hotspots and stressed the importance of fair distribution of refugees and of showing solidarity and calmness.

Szijjarto highlighted the need for more dialog within the EU so that the Union can control its borders.

Asked on why Hungary raised a fence along its borders, the Hungarian foreign minister said his country is “simply observing the regulations of the Schengen Treaty, which we all have to respect”.
