Reporters’ Union declares 5-hour work stoppage

A group of reporters unfurled a black banner across the railings in front of the Greek PM, Alexis Tsipras’s office in Maxmos Mansion, Monday. The banner read ‘Black has no grading’, which referred to the intended plan by the government to shut down all other national TV stations. The protesters were prevented from approaching the PM’s office by several riot police unit vehicles. Earlier journalists along with other employees from commercial TV stations gathered in front of the Greek parliament showing their opposition to the imminent shutting down of the television stations employing them. The Journalists’ Union of Athens Daily Newspapers (ESIEA) has declared a 5-hour work stoppage from 10am till 3pm, Monday, protesting against the government’s intentions to revoke all national broadcasting licenses, except the 4 ones it recently issued in a tender. Many workers in the private broadcasting sector will be left without work if the plan moves forward.
