Reports: Greek DM's Thur. meeting with US Sec't of Defense postponed

Media reports say Panos Kammenos won’t be meeting either the No. 1 or No. 2 at the Pentagon when he visits Washington D.C.

A scheduled meeting this week in Washington D.C. between US Secretary of Defense Ashton Carter and Greece’s DM, Panos Kammenos, has been postponed, according to reports.

No reason was given for the postponement, according to information first published by the tovima.gr site and the longtime correspondent in the US capital, Mihalis Ignatiou.

Reports state that the Pentagon requested the postponement.

The development comes days after Kammenos, the outspoken head of the rightist-populist Independent Greeks (AN.EL) party in the current SYRIZA government, said he’d proposed to Washington to construct a new NATO airbase in the … Aegean.

“Vima” refers to the development as a “cold shower” for the often blunt Kammenos, who began his political career decades ago from New Democracy party’s youth wing.
If the report proves true, then Kammenos will travel to Washington without a scheduled meeting with either the No. 1 or No. 2 at the Pentagon.

The meeting with Carter was set for Thursday.

Nevertheless, he is expected to meeting with US Assistant Secretary of State Victoria Nuland on Friday, with media speculation rampant on whether the US side will broach the issue of Kammenos recent and very high-profile contacts and trips with the Putin government in Moscow.

No announcement had been issued, at least by Tuesday afternoon, over the reported postponement.
