Iraklio’s Venetian-era Morosini Fountain, widely known as the Lions Fountain, comes to life again after a decade.
Its water supply was reconnected on Friday restoring one of the historic landmarks of the old part of the Cretan city fountain to its former glory.
The fountain is located in Iraklio’s Eleftherios Venizelos Square and the water was reconnected on a pilot basis, through the coordinated efforts of Iraklio local authorities and the local antiquities ephorate.
The project aims to showcase both the monument and the historic centre of Iraklio, since the fountain is considered one of the finest examples of 17th century sculpture on Crete.
The water runs through a special zeolite filter ensuring that it does not damage the monument.
