Russia media claims Moscow’s getting Cyprus airbase – Nicosia flatly denies

RIA Novosti refers to an updated defense cooperation memorandum with upgraded facilities and allocation of land for the development of Russian military facilities

Cyprus flat out denied an earlier report on Monday claiming Nicosia was ready to grant Russia the right to build and operate a military airbase on the divided east Mediterranean island.

The island republic’s foreign minister said there’s no question of such a development, with only a bilateral deal offering certain provisional support to Russian vessels up for renewal and nothing else.

The “out-of-left-field” report was carried earlier by the Russian news agency RIA Novosti.
