Scotland: Former Prime Minister Nicola Sturgeon arrested

Sturgeon’s arrest follows the arrest of her husband Peter Merrell in April.

Former Scottish Prime Minister Nicola Sturgeon was arrested at her home on Sunday in connection with an ongoing investigation by the Authority into the finances of her party, the Scottish National Party (SNP).

The Police Scotland investigation relates to the whereabouts of £600,000 of SNP coffers, which came from Scottish independence campaign donations.

The 52-year-old politician is considered a suspect, is in custody and is being questioned by the police.

Sturgeon’s arrest follows the arrest of her husband Peter Merrell in April.

Merrell and Scottish MP Colin Beattie, who was SNP treasurer at the time, have been released without charge pending further investigation.

Police searched Sturgeon and her husband’s home, their garden, and also searched SNP headquarters with a warrant, taking boxes of documents and computers.
