State funding approved for political parties

Greek minister approves state funding for parties

Greek Interior Minister Panayiotis Kouroublis approved a total of 4.5 million euros to be paid out to 12 parties during the second half of the year. The payment for this year is based on the results of the 2012 national elections and the European Parliament vote in 2014, hence the main opposition conservative New Democracy (ND) party will receive the largest payment from the second tranche (1.25 mln euros). The Radical Left Coalition (SYRIZA) will receive 1.14 million.

Any party receiving more than 1.5 percent of the vote in either of the elections will be eligible for state funding.
