Supporters, opponents of Skouries mine continue to square-off

An announcement by workers read: “We will not allow anyone to insult our just cause to ensure our livelihood as an ‘authorized service’ for the employer”

A simmering clash involving the Skouries gold mine in northern Greece continued this week with workers at the complex taking to the streets to rally in favor of the embattled investment.

The development comes after a latest round of protests by local residents and environmentalists opposed to the Skouries complex, managed and exploited by the Canadian Eldorado Gold multinational.

Tension was reported on Monday in the community of Megali Panagia between pro- and anti-goldmine residents.

In the wake of sharp criticism directed at the relevant minister, Panagiotis Lafazanis, by workers’ representatives over the recent period, the latter stated on Tuesday that “the government is determined to examine the issue of the Halkidiki gold mines  to uphold legality, environmental protection and the public good, based on its (government’s) commitments.”

Lafazanis, the unofficial head of ruling SYRIZA’s virulently anti-capitalist leftist wing, emphasized that the government will take all necessary measures and decisions.

He also criticized the roadblocks and other protests undertaken by the mine’s workers, although no comment was issued on similar actions by anti-mining protesters.

A later announced by workers took aim straight at Lafazanis, stressing:

“We will not allow anyone to insult our just cause to ensure our livelihood as an ‘authorized service’ for the employer.”
