Weapons in a farmhouse! Suspected terrorist and partner under arrest

The suspected terrorist claims he had “retired” from a life of crime and had turned to farming to support his wife and two young children

Giorgos Petrakakos, a suspected terrorist, and his partner are to be remanded in custody following their arrest by the counter-terrorism squad in Volos, a coastal port city in Thessaly. They are due to testify before the 17th examining magistrate on Monday on three criminal as well as a number of misdemeanor charges.

Petrakakos denies involvement in acts of terrorism, according to sources. He admits that he owns the guns found on his premises, but states that they had not been used and were kept locked without any access to these by his partner and mother of his two children, aged 2 and 4 years of age.

The suspected terrorist’s partner, aged 36, admits to knowing about Petrakakos criminal past. She says that she became aware of his activities when pregnant with their first child.

On his part, Petrakakos told police that he has decided to “retire” from his life to take up farming. Nonetheless, police on Monday found a  hidden arsenal with heavy weapons during a search of the farmhouse in Molos, Fthiotida, used as a hideout by Petrakakos.

Weapons found include an anti-tank RPG rocket launcher, six kalashnikov rifles, two Uzi submachine guns, rifle parts, hand grenades, detonators and many more weapons that have been taken to the police forensics lab in order to ascertain whether they have been used in criminal activities.

Apart from Petrakakos and his wife, there are another two suspects that have been arrested and due to appear before the magistrate on Tuesday. Together Petrakakos, his partner and the other two are charged with committing terrorists acts, firearms possession, robbery, harboring criminals and forgery.

Police believe that Petrakakos is a close associate of convicted terrorist Nikos Maziotis though he has denied any involvement in terrorist actions.
