SYRIZA scraps promises of ENFIA reductions, sends out notices on Oct. 10

Property owners are in for a rude awakening this month

The Radical Left Coalition (SYRIZA) government has scrapped its pledge to offer reductions to the single property tax (ENFIA). The first tax bills are to be sent out on October 10 and will be based according to tax statements registered by October 9.

No new groups will be offered ameliorations with the criteria being the same as in the first year of the controversial tax’s application. Vulnerale groups include the unemployed, orphans, members of large families as well as the disabled (AMEA) that could be entitled to a 50% rebate provided the household income is low.

Not only will there be no reductions, but the tax will be calculated according to out-of-date objective values that no longer apply. Just a few months ago the government had leaked plans to reduce these by 30%.

Just a few days prior to the September 20 elections, former deputy finance minister Nadia Valavani said that if objective values were to be adjusted then those of poorer regions would increase in value whereas more upmarket areas would be reduced.
