The explosions at Brussels’ airport and metro station Maelbeek killed at least 34 people and injured more than 230

On Tuesday morning, the heart of European Union was attacked by suicide bombers of Islamic State killing at least 34 people and injuring more than 230.

The explosions occurred at Brussels’ airport and metro station Maelbeek shocked the Belgian capital, but also the whole world.

About an hour later, due to the security situation, the city’s transport authority closed all public transport services, while citizens were instructed to avoid leaving the buildings. There are still fears that IS fighters have not completed their attacks and that they will hit again.

Eight hours after the deadly attacks, Islamic State (or Daesh) claimed responsibility for the terrorist attacks in Brussels in a statement uploaded on ‘Amaq Agency’ network used by IS to disseminate propaganda, while threatening to conduct more attacks in European countries.

The statement read ‘Islamic State warriors carried out a series of bombings with explosive belts and devices on Tuesday, targeting an airport and a central metro station in the centre of the Belgian capital Brussels, a country participating in the international coalition against the Islamic State’.

New York, London, Paris and many other capitals around the world immediately imposed strict security measures at major transport hubs, while European governments, including Greek government, called an extraordinary meeting.
