The Berlin Wall that still stands in Germany

Sunday, November 9, marks the 25th anniversary since the fall of the Berlin Wall, a divide that remains in Germany and threatens the stability of the whole of Europe

A quarter of a century since the fall of the Berlin Wall, Time Magazine points to another wall in Berlin in its article “Germany’s Wall that Didn’t Fall”. The wall the magazine refers to is the partition between those who are in Germany society and non-Western migrants. This modern wall undermines the sociocultural stability of Germany.

Germany’s neonazi National Socialist Underground (NSU) carried out a series of racist crimes from 2000-2007 that included the murder of eight Turks and one Greek living in Germany.

The article continues by stating that Germany didn’t expect to have its guest workers, particularly Turkish laborers, to stay permanently. Germany’s tiered school system and housing market are also a topic of focus as far as discrimination against minority groups is concerned.

The article states that racism in Germany is embedded in daily culture, the media and education.
