The Guardian: Greece is once again on the brink of disaster

Today’s voting affects most countries in the euro zone

In an article entitled “Greece on brink of new ‘catastrophe’ as PM battles to avert snap elections”, British newspaper The Guardian comments on the interview given by PM Antonis Samaras on Saturday and the current polical developments in view of the third round of the presidential elections that will take place today.

“Greece’s embattled prime minister, Antonis Samaras, issued an eleventh-hour appeal to parliamentarians on Saturday in an attempt to avert snap elections that would almost certainly plunge the eurozone into renewed crisis,” states the article and notes that if the deputies fail to elect a new President of the Republic today, national elections will follow and radical leftists would be likely to win.

The Guardian underlines that this third crucial voting “has electrified Greece, rattled markets and unnerved Europe,” as it affects most countries in the euro zone.

“With Greece facing debt repayments of almost €5bn in the first three months of 2015 alone, the spectre of a disorderly default looms once again,” the article concludes.
