The Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk (European People’s Party) and the Foreign Minister of Italy Federica Mogkerini (Socialists) will eventually succeed Herman van Rompuy the President of the European Council and Catherine Ashton the top of European diplomacy.
Although the application of Federica Mogkerini considered given, Donald Tusk had to face the Prime Minister of Denmark Chele Torningk-Schmidt. But Herman van Rompuy took care to facilitate journalists as while talking with the President of Cyprus Nikos Anastasiadis in front of an open microphone by mistake confirmed that Donald Tusk will succeed Herman van Rompuy.
Mr. Tusk will take office on the 1st of December 2014 and his term will expire on the 31st of May 2017, while Federica Mogkerini which will be at the same time and one of the vice-presidents of the European Commission will take office on the 1st of November together with the other Commissioners of the Juncker Commission.
