Tsipras: Only elections will bring political stability in Greece

“The current administration has no mandate to strike deals that will bind the country for years and decades without consulting the biggest party in Greece,” said the president of SYRIZA

Mr Tsipras, the president of main opposition party SYRIZA, sent a message to Europe via Bloomberg during his first interview after his party’s victory in the elections and wanted to reassure Europeans regarding Greeks choosing a left party: “We are a pro-European force that wants to change Europe, not dismantle it”.

Alexis Tsipras stressed the issue of memoranda and Greek debt and said that “The current administration has no mandate to strike deals that will bind the country for years and decades to come without taking into account the result of last Sunday’s EU elections and without consulting the biggest party in Greece,” .

He reiterated his desire to go to national elections and said that “Only elections will bring political stability in Greece,”.

Regarding his party’s presence in the European Parliament, he clarified that SYRIZA’ ideology and line is closer to Podemos, without ruling out the possibility of cooperation with Socialists.

“We would be open to cooperation on the condition that they will return to their political roots, and stop accepting austerity as the only option,” he said and added “Not if they remain under the spell of Angela Merkel’s hegemony.”
