Turkish President Erdogan converts museum of Monastery of Christ Saviour into a mosque (video-photos)

The beautiful mosaics will be covered up

Newsroom August 21 09:48

The provocations by Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan against the Christians continue, as after the conversion of the Hagia Sophia into an Islamic mosque, another iconic Christian place of worship which served as a museum called the Monastery of Christ at Chora will also be turned into a mosque.

The conversion of the Monastery into a mosque had been decided since last year, however it had not been implemented until today, when the decision was published in the Turkish government gazette.

The Monastery of Christ at Chora (Μονή του Χριστού της Χώρα) was a monastery in Constantinople near the Gate of Adrianople (Edirne Kapı), and south of the Palace of the Porphyrogenitus (Tekfur Sarayı). Its well-preserved mosaics and frescoes are important examples of monumental art of the Late Byzantine period. After serving as a mosque (known as Kariye Mosque or Ali Pasha Kenise Mosque), it was converted into a museum in 1945 and is now included on the list of the Historic Areas of Istanbul of UNESCO World Heritage.
