U.S ready to send Patriot anti-aircraft missile to Ukraine, as conflict with Russia reaches concerning escalation

Russia said it would respond

The United States is in the process of sending Patriot anti-aircraft missile systems to Ukraine, a decision that could be announced as soon as this week, three US officials told Reuters.

Ukraine has asked its Western allies to send it air defense systems, including Patriot missiles, to protect itself from heavy Russian bombing. The country’s energy infrastructure has been the target of these intense bombing campaigns recently.

The Patriots, manufactured by Raytheon Technology Corp, are designed to intercept incoming missiles.

Two of the officials, who spoke to Reuters on condition of anonymity, said the announcement could come as early as Thursday. Formal approval by US President Joe Biden and Defence Secretary Lloyd Austin is awaited.

Former Russian President Dmitry Medvedev has warned NATO not to supply Ukraine with Patriot systems, saying Moscow would see this as a clear escalation on the part of NATO.
