Ukraine on the verge of a civil war

Situation is getting out of hand

After the bloody incidents in Slaviansk with the shooting down of Ukrainian army helicopters and the death of pro-Russian separatists as well as citizens, the tension has escalated in Odessa.

The conflicts began during a protest, which involved fans of a local football team with supporters of the territorial integrity of the Ukraine.

However, once the crowd met with pro-Russian separatists, the latter threw molotov cocktails and attacked the nationalists with clubs, while police, according to Western media journalists, remained idle.

As reports state, a protester in favor of Ukrainian territorial integrity fell dead due to a gunshot to the head, while dozens are injured, one of which’s condition is serious.

At the same time, a fire-truck which rushed to the spot had to be abandoned by its driver when he was attacked by supporters of the football team.

Gunshots were heard on both sides while 2000 protesters included many who threw Molotovs and fumigants.

Some of the fans wore shirts with the far-right “Right Sector” party, while they held chains, batons and shields, according to Itar-Tass news agency.

The group shouted slogans such as “Glory to the Ukraine” and “Death to the enemies” and “Knife to the Russians”.

Earlier, Ukrainian troops in armored personnel carriers moved to Slaviansk while according to the Interior Minister of the Ukraine, Arsen Avakov, the city was surrounded and nine terrorist checkpoints were taken over by the army.

Meanwhile, as the crisis escalates, Russia calls for a meeting of the UN Security Council, after the Ukrainian army’s operation in Slaviansk.
