UN chief Moon calls on Europe to open borders to refugees

Wednesday sideline meeting on Syrian war expected with great interest

UN General Secretary Ban Ki moon called on the European countries to ‘do more’ on the refugee crisis from the podium of the United Nations General Assembly. Addressing the 193 UN country leaders, Moon acknowledged that the refugee crisis stirred ‘intense passions’, but stressed that any action related to the refugee matter must be guided by ‘international legislation, human rights and compassion’. The General Secretary underlined that ‘building walls’ was not the solution to the problem, but rather dealing with the causes of the refugee crisis like wars and religious persecution. ‘100 million people around the world are in need of immediate humanitarian aid and another 60 million were either displaced or refugees”, he underlined in his speech. Moon reminded the assembly that he has called a Ministerial Summit on Wednesday on the sidelines of the UN General meeting about the causes of the migrant crisis. Wednesday’s meeting is expected with great interest as some of the leaders whose countries are involved in the Syrian conflict, like the US, Russia and France will voice their views on the ongoing war and how to proceed.
