UNESCO member states adopt Greek initiative to stop antiquities smuggling

UNESCO member states pledged to commit illegal cultural trafficking

UNESCO member states signed a declaration expressing their political will to protect humanity’s cultural heritage on Wednesday after an initiative put forward by Greece. The initiative comes in response to a steep rise in smuggling of antiquities and cultural property following developments in the Middle East.

The 128 members pledged to make an effort to stop illegal trafficking of antiquities and cultural property. Member countries are urged to apply stricter national legislations against illegal trading of cultural treasures.
