The president of Vanuatu, Baldwin Lonsdale, calls upon the international community for more humanitarian aid after the catastrophe wrought by cyclone “Pam”

He hastily returned to his small South Pacific state from a UN conference, and addressed the international community, asking for greater humanitarian help, since -as he staed- 9 out of 10 buildings have been completely destroyed.

The need for aid is “urgent”, after the cyclone passed through Vanuatu on Friday, with winds raging up to 320 km/h.

Many foreign leaders have answered the call. Military airplanes from Australia, New Zealand and France arrived to the island bearing food, medicine, generators and rescue crews.

The dead number 8 and wounded 30, so far, but authorities are estimating that this number will rise.
