Varoufakis: Greece should never have entered Eurozone!

Greece’s FinMin views Greece’s EZ entry as a big mistake from which there is no going back

Finance Minister Yanis Varoufakis told “Efimerida ton Syntakton” newspaper on Saturday that no country should have entered such an “unstably-built common currency”, especially a country with a history of high deficits, such as Greece. He said that the path that brought Greece into the monetary union “no longer exists” and Greece would find itself in “unpleasant circumstances” if the country tried to back up.

“If the eurozone does not change, it will not be able to survive,” said Varoufakis, adding that he believed Greece could do away with the need for a new loan if the current debt is significantly restructured, an issue that has been raised already.

He told the newspaper that the government is looking for an agreement that “will make the Greek public debt and the Greek social economy viable again.” A new plan for Greece would be presented by the Greek government shortly.

Varoufakis denied that his Eurogroup colleagues had verbally abused him at the meeting on Friday, April 24. He wishes that Eurogroup Chief Jeroen Dijsselbloem had denied this fact sooner. Varoufakis views German Finance Minister as “an important political adversary” and Greece’s creditors as “disparate partners.”
