Video: The terrifying moment an avalanche buries 10 skiers in Austria

All came out alive

The last two amateur skiers missing after being buried by an avalanche in the Lech Zürs region of western Austria are safe and have contacted authorities late Sunday night.

The search and rescue operation, involving helicopters and specially trained dogs, has been suspended, the Austrian news agency ARA reported.

The avalanche hit the area early Sunday afternoon. Authorities, based on a skier’s amateur video, assumed 10 people had been swept away.

The video in question was posted on social media and shows the avalanche overwhelming the skiers. In total, four people were injured. One was taken to a hospital in Innsbruck as his condition was considered serious.

It is worth noting that every year in Austria 20 people are killed by avalanches on average.

Rescue services had already warned this weekend that there was a high risk of avalanches in this zone and in neighboring Tyrol.
