Who’s the blonde that kissed Tsipras?

From prison to the European Parliament

As the Greek PM Alexis Tsipras proceeded to his designated seat at the European Parliament on Wednesday to present Greece’s case before the plenary, photographers captured a blonde woman approaching and kissing him. Her name is Martina Anderson and she is an MEP from Northern Ireland, representing Sinn Fein.

Anderson was an active member of the IRA and served 13 years in prison after she was found guilty for participating in a failed attempt to assassinate UK PM Margaret Thatcher in 1984 at the Brighton Hotel. She was released in 1998 under the ‘Good Friday agreement’. She was elected to European Parliament in 2014. Sinn Fein has been a very vocal supporter of the radical leftist Greek government since it came to power arguing against austerity policies.
