Choreographer Lorca Massin has presented the first version of Zorba in 1976 at the National Opera, while utilizing Mikis Theodorakis music that he composed in 1964 for the homonym film of Michael Cacoyannis. Ten years later, the composer chose various parts of his work in order to support the story of Zorba. The draft was submitted to the Festival of Verona, where it was proposed to him to orchestrate all the material, which he did in the period of eight months in Paris.
