Aegina boat collision: 77 y.o speedboat captain was in poor health condition (photos)

Three more people on board speedboat besides captain

Newsroom August 17 08:50

UPD: The captain of the speedboat, Thrasyvoulos Lykorenzos, is being transported from the Aegina coast guard headquarters to the Piraeus port courts to plea his case on the tragic incident. During his stay at the coast guard headquarters officers brought in a bed due to his health condition.

According to information, 77-year old Thrasyvoulos Lykourenzos was at the helm of the speedboat named ‘Duente’ that rammed a tourist boat named ‘Antonia’ in the straits of Moni, near the island of Aegina, Tuesday, which resulted in the death of 4 people. The victims, who were among a total of 24 people on board the tourist boat, were Stelios Trimis, the 58 year-old captain of ‘Antonia’, a 5 year-old girl and her 45 year-old father and a 40-45 year-old man, while two others were seriously injured and taken to the Nikaia General Hospital. A 29-year old woman had her limb amputated, while a 16-year-old teenager suffered serious throat injuries. Lykourenzos is under custody at the Aegina coast guard headquarters, while three other people, two females and a male who were also on board the speedboat, were also apprehended. The captain of the speedboat claimed he was not speeding, saying he was unable to avoid the collision. However, eyewitness accounts contradict him saying he was moving with great speed before the fatal crash occurred. Protothema.gr spoke to Nikos Pteroudis, a close friend of Lykourenzos, who said the captain had been released from a private clinic in Athens on Wednesday after receiving treatment for multiple thromboses in the lower limbs. Thrombosis can affect the patient’s brain activity and reflexes at any time causing a momentary loss of consciousness. Lykourenzos’s friends in Aegina had warned him on numerous occasions to stop using the boat due to his poor health condition but he refused to heed their warnings. He also continued ring his motorbike, despite having fallen off its 5 times and sustaining injuries. Lykourenzos had built an exterior elevator at his house, as can be seen in the photos published by prorothema.gr.
