Amphipolis Syndrome: Restoring the mosaic linked to Greek reputation

Can the restoration and the repatriation of Greece’s cultural artefacts help restore the country’s reputation?

The Ministry of Culture has issued an announcement that the full mosaic will be ready on Thursday or Friday. They hope to find a signature of the artist somewhere on the mosaic as was customary at the time as well as more clues regarding the identity of the occupant of the tomb.

As all eyes are upon the excavations at Amaphipolis, a CNN article pointed to the “Amphipolis Syndrome” that it believes is largely a product of the financial crisis as Greece scrambles to restore its tarnished image and boost national pride and morale. The article also points to the other cultural treasures that are being shocased, such as the confirmation of the bones of Macedonian King Philip II, Alexander the Great’s father, found at the royal tomb at Vergina and the arrival of the three prominent lawyers, including Mrs. Alamuddin, to Greece.
