Greek navy frigate “Hydra” is towing the boat with the 700 immigrants to safety.
The 77-meter-long cargo freighter found itself 30 nautical miles southeast of Crete after suffering from engine failure on Tuesday. There is no danger of the ship sinking but the strong winds are making the rescue operation difficult.
According to military sources in addition to illegal immigrants there are also some armed men between the occupants.
The same sources speak of many women and children in the boat.
Although the Marine Ministry has not made known as to where the boat with immigrants will be taken, in the South Coast of Crete health services are preparing to take care of the immigrants and taking all preventive measures for Ebola.
The boat is reported to have sailed from Africa and was heading to Italy.
