A European Commission report on the relocation of refugees released on Wednesday says the implementation of the program was below expectations. The European Commission calls on the EU member-states to share in the fair redistribution of refugees across Europe. European Commissioner on Migration Dimirtris Avramopoulos underlined that more needed to be done on the matter of refugee relocation and faster. ‘We cannot be satisfied by the results so far’, he said. ‘The urgent humanitarian crisis in Greece needs to be addressed fast and avoid a deterioration of the situation in Italy’, pointed out the Commissioner. He went on to say that any recent progress achieved concerning stifling human trafficking rings could only be upheld if legal asylum seeking procedures were implemented. The Commission report noted that the 20,000 refugee relocation target had not been achieved till mid May. Only 355 people had been relocated from March till May, bringing the total number of asylum applicants from Greece and Italy to 1,500. Based on the most recent figures nearly 46,000 migrants and asylum applicants are in Greece waiting to be processed.
