EC: TV licensing procedures must be complaint to EU law

Commission expresses strong reservations over procedures

Newsroom September 2 12:01

European Commissioner for Digital Economy and Society Gunther Oettinger expressed his reservations regarding the legality of the procedures of the tender for the TV licences in Greece, responding to a question submitted by MEP Eva Kaili. The Commissioner made it clear that each EU member-state was free to implement its domestic regulations on matters of issuing TV licenses provided they were in compliance with EU laws that included the freedom of services provisions and installation outlined in the EU Treaty. ‘As far as the Commission is aware of there are legal matters pending in Greek courts concerning the procedures of the tender in Greece’, he stated. Commenting on Oettinger’s reply, Eva Kaili stressed that the SYRIZA-ANEL government was attempting to establish a ‘regime’ by controlling the flow of information.
