Economic policymaking in the eurozone is a comedy of errors, says Varoufakis

He stresses the clash between Greek government and the Eurogroup was not a clash between left and conservative mainstream

Former Finance Minister Yanis Varoufakis published a new article on the “Project Syndicate” website stressing that the “failed Greek fiscal consolidation and reform program” proves the failure of European governance while describing the economic policymaking applied by Europe as a “remarkable comedy of errors”.

Varoufakis mentions Greece’s intense negotiations with its creditors proved to European citizens that the eurozone is governed by a body that “lacks written rules of procedure, debates crucial matters “confidentially” (and without minutes being taken), and is not obliged to answer to any elected body, not even the European Parliament”.

Regarding this year’s negotiations with creditors, former Finance Minister explains that “It would be a mistake to think of the standoff between the Greek government and the Eurogroup as a clash between Greece’s left and Europe’s conservative mainstream” and emphasizes that our own “Athens Spring” had to do with the right of a small European country to challenge a failed policy that condemns generations.
